About the photo: Liquid reality

I’m a huge fan of reflections. I look for them wherever I go – glass, mirrors, puddles, lakes. Sometimes I turn them upside down, like I did for this photo, so that the reflection is on top. I think it works well when you have a very sharp reflection because it can trick the mind into thinking reality is a reflection, and vice versa. I took this photo at Tanjung Aru beach, the best spot for sunsets in Kota Kinabalu!

Photo Inspiration: Henri Cartier-Bresson

One of my favorite photographers is Henri Cartier-Bresson. I really like how he portrayed a natural order of things, be it people or architecture, nature or emotions. He’s considered by many as the godfather of photojournalism, although he said the’s not a photojournalist, but a surrealist. Capa told him he shouldn’t label himself as a surrealist though, or he’ll never get any work. In the 70′s they made a short documentary about him called The Decisive Moment. It’s simply Bresson talking about his photographs, photography, and life. Here are a few quotes -

On geometry, his greatest joy:

“It’s an intellectual pleasure to have everything in the right place. It’s a recognition of an order.”

“The difference between a good picture and a mediocre is a question of millimeters.”

On taking photographs:

“You shouldn’t overshoot. It’s like over-eating and over-drinking.”

“It’s a question of awareness…It doesn’t take any brains. It takes sensitivity, a finger, and two legs.”

“I never think, I act. Quick. You have to be yourself and forget yourself so that the image comes much stronger…get involved completely…Ideas are very dangerous. When you are photographing…you don’t try to prove or explain anything…it comes by itself.
