This past weekend I went up to Seoul with my friends Heather and Beau as a goodbye trip before they leave to go work in Japan. While I was there having some fun (while freezing a bit), I was also able to cross something else off of my 27 before 27 list.
This past weekend I braved the cold weather of Seoul and went to the Seoul Museum of Art to see the amazing Tim Burton exhibit!
The first thing about the Museum is that for short it is called the SEMA, which I love since one of the coolest people I know in the world is named Seema and I think she would totally approve.
The museum was PACKED! It was actually the most crowded art exhibit I had ever been to. Even though it was super crowded, it made me happy to see so many people at an art museum. Even when I was working at the Chicago Children’s Museum, I don’t think I had ever seen a museum so busy and full of people. We had to take a number and wait to be called. They let in groups of 100 at a time and by the time we left the number was near 2500.
The exhibit was curated by MOMA and Seoul is the last leg of its international tour (it’s here until April, so if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it).
We weren’t supposed to take photos inside, but I didn’t completely listen. Oops. But Heather looks so cute next to the Japanese movie posters.
There weren’t tons of movie props, but there were a few standouts that I couldn’t resist. Heather spotted the cookie making robot from the start of Edward Scissorhands from across the room, so I tried to not so stealthily get a picture of it’s cookie cutter feet.
The prop I loved most was a topiary also from Edward Scissorhands.
It was awesome to see his creative process, his watercolors and pictures were funny, witty, at times quite dark, which is exactly what I expected. It also made me feel super lazy about my own creative endeavors, but it was quite inspiring at the same time.
There was so much to see, and it really was great, and memorable, and inspiring. Overall it was one of the best museum exhibits I’ve seen in a long time, and you should go see it too.
From Busan with Burton Love,
Jenna
P.S there was this amazing Danny Elfman room with headsets and songs from the films that transported you into the movies in an instant that I loved!
