Korea 2014: A Guide for Entrepreneurs

I recently read this book, Korea 2014: New Information and Cultural Insights Entrepreneurs Need to Start a Business in Korea by Chris Backe and really enjoyed it. I found myself nodding along at basically every single thing in it because it’s all true. Not only is it true, but it is really insightful and even though I’ve lived here for 10 years, I learned a few new things especially with regards to interactions with Koreans and how they do business.

The information about visa types, how to start a business, internet contracts, neighbourhoods in Seoul, etc. is excellent and upgrading this book to “newbie Bible” status wouldn’t be too much of a stretch. The information in it is just so much better than the random crap you can find all over the Internet that is out of date and not useful.

It’s obvious that the book is extremely well-researched, written and edited and the result is a highly-polished final product that I’d recommend to any foreigner considering doing business in Korea. It’s less useful for English teacher types but still worth a read if you’re looking to make your transition to Korea as smoothly as possible.

One Small Critique

The only thing I don’t like about the book is the format. It feels kind of disjointed due to the question/answer nature of it and I know that I would have appreciated a more in-depth analysis of certain topics that aren’t just straight facts.

For example, what does a Korean actually mean when they say XYZ, or more details about what “indirect communication” actually is and what this means when you do business in Korea. Perhaps that’s more of a reflection of my personal reading style than anything else and I know that some people really like books with short, concise bits of useful information.
