Chuncheon, South Korea — Winter Sonata, tall trees covered with snow.. does it ring a bell? Oh yes. It’s a popular Korean melodrama back in 2002, which shooting set is at Nami Island (남이섬), also known as Naminara.
I was discouraged when I heard some people said that there is nothing to see (or do) in Nami. But it didn’t stop me from visiting, and I have to disagree. I saw everyone around there with happy faces and I think anywhere is a great place as long as one enjoys the company.
It was in the afternoon of the second Saturday of August when we visited the island. Firstly, we took a boat at the port bounding for Nami. When we reached the island, we headed directly at a DIY shop and made our own name stamp. Well, we didn’t expect it would be difficult so it took us a lot of time to finish our masterpieces. Nevertheless, we enjoyed it.
Fact: Koreans usually use name stamp (도전 / dojeon) to sign legal documents and before they could officially use that, they should register it first at a local office.
Then, we looked around and saw a statue of a mother breastfeeding her child and of Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo, the major cast members of Winter Sonata. We also had a glimpse of the afternoon show at the middle area of the island where the performers wore extraordinary makeup and used cool props.
Some people were riding bicycles with their families or partners going around the island while others were just sightseeing and taking pictures. There are also few restaurants and souvenir shops in the island.
I bought a dozen box of Snowman pie with red bean filling priced at KRW9,000. Sad to say, the taste didn’t impress us.
If given another chance, I’d love to visit Nami again in autumn or winter with my loved ones.
