I have been staying at the Happy Dragon Hostel in Beijing, and it’s been great! The location is pretty central. It’s easy to get to the forbidden city and other great sites. My only complaint is that it’s hard to find if you don’t know what you’re looking for. Plugging in the address on the GPS helps, but not if you don’t have Internet access.

From the airport, take the Airport Express for 25 RMB TO Dongzhimen subway station. Then, take subway line 2 (for 3 RMB) one station west to YongHeGong Lama Temple station, then change to line 5 and travel south 3 stops to exit at Dong si station. You’ll go out exit B. Cross the street, jaywalking or with the crosswalk accessible by a set of stairs. Immediately walk down the street with all the vendors on the right side. Walk down for quite a ways and you’ll take a right before a large, newer looking building with a sign that has large red Chinese characters on it. The hostel will be at the end of the street.

Alternatively, you could take a taxi from the airport for 140 RMB, but that seems needlessly expensive.
