Souvenir Shopping

I didn’t buy much in the way of things while I was in Cambodia, but the ‘souvenirs’ that took up the most space in my backpack were food. I’ve mentioned it before, but I love going into supermarkets and stores in other countries, even convenience stores. Markets are amazing, but there’s something about getting a peek into the daily lives and shopping habits of other people who I love.In Koh Kong I got some strange ice cream from a supermarket that I still don’t know the flavor of, in Siem Reap while getting snacks for a twelve-hour bus ride I found fantastic (and loud) Kettle Chips.

A few hours before I left Cambodia I popped into a convenience store and walked away with what was probably too much food, all of which cannot be found in South Korea. I’ve finished off most of what I brought back slowly this past week and a half, but the Double Stuff Oreos and one of the Reese’s Cups are still holding on, and the toothbrush too. Tonight I came home after work and had a lovely bowl of tomato soup and half a grilled cheese, it was fantastic. I know part of these cravings is wanting what you know you can’t have, but man is food from home ever comforting. Plus I feel a bit accomplished for getting through Cambodian and Chinese security with a can of soup.

I would also like to say that this past week I feel like the postmaster general! I got TWO packages!! For a girl who has had less than 10 packages this year (including these two newest ones) two packages in a week seems like almost too much! One of the boxes was from my Momma (she sent me a TON of delicious Christmas cookies) and my awesome friend Mike who sent me a Doctor Who shirt, a rocking map and a TON of candy. I also got a Christmas Card from my Dad to boot!

The moral of the story is that mail is great, and if ever you find yourself traveling or going somewhere new check out a local grocery store, you may find some hidden gems, and even if you don’t they’re often great for people watching!
