Are you and your Valentine foodies with a love for seafood? Instead of going to a typical restaurant this Valentine’s day how about having a little fun with your food. Have an adventure at Noryangin fish market.

Noryangin is a wholesale and retail fish market as well as an auction house. It is located in the Noryangjin-dong neighborhood in Dongjak-gu, just south of the Han River.

The market offers a HUGE variety of products including scallops, clams, squid, oysters, conch, sea squirt, spoon worms, crabs, prawns, lobsters and much more! Hundreds of stalls line the indoor market.  Almost all the seafood is alive, making it appear more like a small aquarium. Wander around the many stalls with your date and have fun haggling with the merchants.

Once you select your food the merchant will prepare the items for cooking. Be amazed at their expert filleting skills as they remove skin and bones with precision.

Feeling adventurous?  Try one of Korea’s unique dishes. Live squid will continue to wiggle around your plate and all the way into your mouth.  Want to try some extremely unique flavors? Hongeo is raw stingray that has been fermented and is considered a delicacy in Korea.

Dozens of restaurants line the upper level of the fish market. They range in ethnicity and style.   You can choose the restaurant you prefer or ask your merchant to help you select one.

If you buy fish you can eat it raw, cooked, in a soup or with an array of sauces and sides. The restaurants are clean and provide rice, sauces, marinades, soy leaves, lettuce and other vegetables to eat with your fish.  It will generally cost $3.00-5.00 per person in addition to your fish purchase.

You can ask your vender to save the non-filleted pieces of any fish you purchase to have maeuntang.  This is a spicy stew that uses the leftover parts of the fish.
