I like to do this teaching activity when it has recently been snowing. There are many ways to go about this activity, but this is usually how I do it:
- Start conversation by talking about the snow. Such as, “It’s snowing today. What do you like to do outside in the snow? Build a snowman, have a snowball fight…”
- Give each child a piece of white paper. Have them fold their paper in half and trace a hand on each side. You may have to help them with this.
- Explain that each finger will be a snowman they can decorate. Go over vocabulary for each finger (i.e. thumb, pointer finger, middle finger, ring finger, and pinky).
- Talk about accessories the snowmen can wear.
- Talk about feelings that snowmen can have.
Encourage your students to be creative. I enjoy when my students have reindeer or Santa themed fingers for Christmas. The super hero fingers with capes and masks are my favorite.
