I made this image after seeing George Takei's post on the queen in rainbow colors (yay gay marriage in the UK!).
Who wore it better?
So it made me ask, what has President Park said on gay marriage? My boyfriend and I did a little bit of research.
In 2007, Ms. Park talked about the gay issue (article at Wikitree). She stated that "동성애는 각자의 취향으로 인정돼야 한다", which translates to "Homosexuality should be allowed as a personal preference". This comment re-surfaced during the presidential election; her supporters argued that this quote represented her views in 2007 but did not reflect her views during her presidential run. However, Park Geun-hye re-confirmed her stance through her party, Sae-nuri Dang in late 2012, with the statement "동성애자에 대한 사회적 차별은 없도록 할 것" (there shouldn't be any social discrimination against homosexuals). Nonetheless, the party stated that they don't need to create laws legalizing homosexuality.
Of course, gay activists responded by pointing out that homosexuality is legal in Korea. It appears that Sae-nuri Dang doesn't want to take any political risks when it comes to homosexuality in Korea. As some activists have pointed out, however, just acknowledging the existence of homosexuals in the public sphere is progress. And there are definitely politicians out there that have the balls to fight for gay rights.
