The Nomad Within: Wonders of Asia
Exhibit Description
This exhibition features 13 photographs from Pete DeMarco’s travels in Asia. He takes the viewer on a colorful journey through Korea, China, Mongolia, Myanmar (Burma), and Malaysia. From the jungles of Borneo to the rooftops of Busan, each of the images celebrates the beauty of our world and the wonders of travel.
Artist Statement
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~ Mark Twain
I often dream of escaping to exotic destinations. A voice inside says: “explore the ancient temples of Bagan” or “ride a trolley through the streets of Hong Kong”, and seduced by its whispers, I pack my bags and go. It says, in the midst of moments of everyday boredom: “hang with nomads in the Gobi Desert” or “dive with sea turtles in Borneo”.
That voice is my nomad within talking, and listening to it makes me feel alive. Mine told me to me to venture through one of the most captivating destinations on the planet – Asia. The Orient offers the intrepid traveler unforgettable experiences like none other. Whether it’s centuries old temples or ultra modern skyscrapers, Buddhist temples or Muslim mosques, emerald oceans or red-baked deserts, Asia mystifies.
Images have the power to move people to action. It doesn’t matter if someone drives to the next town or flies to a new country, the important thing is to just go. I hope my pictures inspire people to follow their own nomadic voice, and to arrive at all the places that its whispers might bring them.
Photographer Bio
Peter DeMarco is a self-taught photographer from America. He moved to Korea in 2007 and now lives in Busan where he teaches at the Busan University of Foreign Studies. He sometimes uses a digital photographic technique known as HDR (high dynamic range), merging multiple exposures of the same scene to create more dramatic images. When he travels, he enjoys taking photos of cityscapes, landscapes, architecture, and people. He also writes travel articles for magazines. When he’s not taking pictures, you can find him eating samgyeopsal, planning his next trip, chilling at the beach, or hiking in the mountains. One day he will finally learn how to speak Korean.

Directions
The IUM Art Space Gallery (T: 052-260-1321) is located across from the KBS Broadcasting and Ulsan Cultural Arts Center. There are a number of city buses that go there (see map below). A taxi from the main bus station to the gallery is about 5,000 won. The gallery is open from 10:30am to 9:00pm Tuesday to Sunday. Closed Mondays.
